Grignolino, Carlin de Paolo, Piedmont 2014

Producer : CARLIN DE PAOLO

Four generations have made wines at Carlin de Paolo, with a strength and resilience that ties into the family motto: The best ingredient of a wine is the honesty of the producer. When we think of Piedmontese red wines, we almost always think of Nebbiolo and the villages that made it famous – Barolo and Barbaresco. Big, bold and only really palatable after several years in bottle. Yet there is so much more to the region than those two villages and one grape. The wines of Carlin de Paolo reflect this, particularly with their Grignolino plantings. The grape variety derives its name from the word ‘grignole’, which means ‘many pips’ in the local Piedmontese dialect of Asti. Having such a large percentage of pips, means winemakers must take extra care during pressing to ensure wines stay light and elegant. This is what Carlin de Paolo have achieved. No bitter tannins, just a delicate and perfumed red that showcases another side to Piedmont. Perfect chilled in the summer!
