Producer: JEAN BAPTISTE PONSOT
Jean Baptiste Ponsot is a rising star in Burgundy, with nearly 20 vintages under his belt despite his young age. He took over from his father at the tender age of twenty, and transformed what had previously been a grape growing business, into a fully-fledged winery. Jean Baptiste works with the environment, but is not above using synthetic products if they are best for his vines. Any synthetic treatments are mindfully chosen over organic alternatives on the basis that the specific synthetic products are less intrusive than the organically derived ones. He works from Rully, a village in the Chalonnais area south of the Cote d’Or. His Chardonnay presents competent competition for its prestigious neighbours, Chassagne and Puligny Montrachet, to which his vineyards share the same limestone rich soil.
The Domaine has been in his family for over 60 years, handed from grandfather to grandson. It presents a rare opportunity to drink elegant, complex and expertly made white Burgundy, without the usual price tag. This is a very classic style of white Burgundy, soft and buttery but with minerality and fresh acidity. Well balanced and drinking well in its youth. Very accessible.
